Another Ferry tale
I have loved my ferry rides. About 6 in as many days. First to and from Orkney, and then to Lewis and Harris which are one, and then from to Lewis (not Harris) to North Uist, no ferry needed to South Uist, but needed one to Barra, and then after a most distinctly ‘Wild camper” night in Castlebay an other ferry to Oban on the mainland, but the two more open deck ferries in wet and windy conditions to rejoin the mainland on my way to Troon.
That was interesting.
Wild camping is a Scottish tradition. Camp on public land as long as it is not inconsiderate.
So I did my bit for wild camping on Barra. As I explained there is a shortage of beds so I resorted as any “wild” camper would to sleep in a garage. It was the only one I could find and it was empty. Talk about a stroke of luck. I stepped out in the rain in the morning to see the ferry was checking in passengers so on the bike, ride out of the garage and almost straight on to the ferry.
Sometimes bad luck is not that bad.
Since then two nights in Troon. I knew a bloke that reckoned Troon was a pretty good place to play golf. My Air BnB hosts were pretty good. Air BnB gives me mixed feelings. Their web site is crap. Their bookings system is crap. The way they let you communicate with hosts is crap. BUT once you actually get to the hosts place in the main they are excellent.
I did have the bewildering experience of staying at a place last year where to my surprise I found a “hobby” on the bathroom floor...so I left at daybreak, Here is my problem with Air BnB it is self picking and VERY POORLY !
Then I went to Glasgow a HUGELY underrated city. It has beautiful buildings. And has Uber, another great institution for lost and bewildered travellers.
So here I am again on a ferry to Ireland.
What fun. I would load a picture if Apple let me but it seems to prefer that I put pictures in the cloud where they can access them as well. Hardly fair !
Talking of fair I see blue sky ahead......whoopee
